I've came across several references to the 324/392 merger.

If I understand right, the 324 will be operated by Centrebus Harlow in it's current format, aside from the Sele School journeys - for one week only.

From the following Monday, Centrebus will then operate the service as 392 to Hertford Heath, then missing out Rye Park then onto Harlow, with support from HCC as far as the Heath, but then commercial beyond.

Now, if I am reading this right, from the next day!, Roadrunner will divert Service 392 to remove from Town Station and Sainsbury's in Harlow, and remove it from Rye Park - instead, running over the Centrebus 392 to Hertford Heath and Hertford! Is this to be with part-Essex CC subsidy, then commercial into Hertford?

Having seen the Lee Valley bus war ending, I'm surprised to see it has flared up again!!!!

Herts are now down to just nine timetable panel downloads not yet ready (for 28/03/11 start) on their website - Watford 8, Watford 10, 500/501, 607, 793, and the four routes/groups that will make up the relaunched Pink St Albans (city services) network.  Attached are 634, 635 (note now seperate panels, plus seperate from the 700), 636, 712/714, 758 group, and I have added Sullivan's 951 as it returns earlier this month.

The position with these services has now changed, the 324 will now continue operating commercially (it was always going to be a fully commercial operation on this service) as is for the time being, Centrebus will not be operating any part of the 392.  Roadrunner, as I understand it, will be operating the 392 in some form also fully commercially though I don't know the precise details of the route/timetable they will following.  All the confusion being down to those who knew what was happening not bothering to inform those who needed to know what the situation was.

Thank you!

Now, attached are the timetables for the 500/501, 607, 793. Only Watford 8, Watford 10, and St Albans Pink Network to follow.

There is a new Stevenage SuperBus microsite up at http://www.arrivabus.co.uk/SB/ which gives links to various articles... some rather interesting re the history of the SB branding...

http://www.arrivabus.co.uk/content.aspx?id=12922

On 27th March the Stevenage town network of bus services are re-launched as the SB network.  For many of you this will be renaming routes as they used to be.  There are a few changes to services too, the changes are as follows:
Stevenage Town

Services - 2/3/4/5 are renumbered SB2 - SB3 - SB4 and SB5
There are also small amends to timetables and new books are now available

Services 4A and 5A are renumbered to SB40 and SB50
Again there are small changes to the services and these are included within the SB4  SB5 timetables

Services SB7 & SB8
On both services buses will now operate every 30 minutes on Saturdays instead of the current 20 minute frequency.

Service 14
The service is renumbered SB6 and has minor adjustments to the timetable.  We hope the new timetable and dedicated vehicles will also improve the reliability of the service.
Other services in the area

Service 94
The 1850 journey from Hitchin to Baldock on Saturday evenings is withdrawn.

Service 300/301
Slight timing adjustments on Sundays.

Service 304

The history of SB Buses in Stevenage

SB2 ContentIn 1970, not long after the formation of London Country Bus Services Ltd from the Country Bus & Coach Department of London Transport, the first 'SuperBus' service was introduced between Chells (Mobbsbury Way) and the Town Centre or Gunnels Wood Road Industrial area, operating to a high frequency (every 5 minutes) and quickly replacing an earlier experimental 'Blue Arrow' pre-booking works service introduced by London Transport prior to its reorganisation.

Initially the service operated without a route number using brightly painted yellow & blue single deckers on a pay as you board, flat fare, farebox system and quickly became a success providing the people of Chells with a regular service from early morning to late evening 7 days a week, as the vast majority of the new town population were used to before migration out from London to the new towns.

A little while later, around 1972 a second neighbourhood, St Nicholas was given the SuperBus treatment, again using brightly painted single deck buses, the new service was called SB2 and ran to the Town Centre and Industrial Area (peaks) every 7/8 minutes.  At the same time, the original Chells service was numbered SB1.

Sometime passed until 1976/7 before the next area, Martins Wood, previously served by conventional double deck town services 813 and 814 were repackaged and rebranded the SuperBus SB3, using the same Yellow and Blue 'SB' livery every 10 minutes to the town and Industrial Area.  By this time, the novelty of seeing bright yellow and blue buses had long since wore off, any vehicles later transferred onto the service were often in the normal green livery with a big yellow 'SB' logo on each side.  As we headed towards the 1980's yellow/blue buses were starting to becoming rare.

SB1 Bus ContentFor the nineteen eighties, the Stevenage town network, along with those in Harlow, Crawley (1978) and other area's was completely redesigned.  Superbus would go in an attempt to ward off arguments that some estates were better served than others, and the SB brand was used to promote a new 'StevenageBus' network.  The new services introduced on 26th April were SB4 (Bedwell, Shephall, Broadwater loop extending to/from Lister Hospital or Symonds Green, replacing 800); SB5 (opposite loop working to SB4 and replacing 801); SB6 (a outer circle in peak hours, connecting various estates to the industrial areas, including the Wedgewood Way Industrial Area on variant SB16, off peak SB6 ran Bus Station, Symonds Green, Lister Hospital, St Nicholas & Chells)  SB7 was a new service to the new Bragbury End Estate.
New estates at Poplars followed with the SB8 in 1981 and Chells Manor with SB11 came in the late '80's and this is basically the network we a familiar with today.

SB1 modernThere were also peak hour work variants SB12.13.14.15 to Gunnels Wood Industrial Area.

At decimalisation the fare was 3p (no change given!) and 1p for children, (2p for children in the peak hours)

In the days of Luton & District the SB was dropped from the 2,3,4 & 5.  However, Sovereign kept their SB1,SB7,SB8, which is why there is a mixture at the moment.

Changes to services in Hertfordshire from 27th March 2011

The timetables of a number of services in Hertfordshire will be revised on 27th March.

This results partly from a reduction in funding by Hertfordshire County Council for those services or parts of services which they provide under contract on routes or at times of the day when denmand is such that the journeys are not used sufficiently to cover their costs of operation.

In some cases, Arriva will be running evening or Sunday journeys currently run by other operators while other companies will run some of the contracted journeys previously run by Arriva.

We have also taken account of the need to adjust some timetables to improve reliability, and there will be new links between Hemel Hempstead and Borehamwood as a result of the extension of Service 550 beyond Watford.

The changes affect services in the Hemel Hempstead, St. Albans, Watford, Ware, Stevenage, Hitchin, Stevenage and Hertford areas.

Basic details of the changes can be seen by clicking here, with full details being shown in new editions of the relevant timetable leaflets or by viewing the timetables on this website.

Adjustments to Arriva services in Hertfordshire
from 27th March 2011
Hemel Hempstead area:
Service 1 (Adeyfield – Town Centre – North End Farm) will run only between Adeyfield and the Town Centre.
The North End Farm section will be replaced by a limited service on Service 12, with journeys from North End Farm at 0840, 1010, 1234 1434 and 1634, and journeys from Town to North End Farm at 1220, 1420 and 1620.
At Adeyfield, Service 1 buses will no longer serve Briery Road, Masons Road and New Park Drive, running instead along High Street Green and Leverstock Green Road. The nearest stops will be at Briery Way/Wood Lane End (Service 320) and Branksome Close/Leverstock Green Road on Service 1. Service 320 will continue to run every half-hour along Wood Lane End.
Service 1 buses will serve Turners Hill, Windmill Road, Sheepcote Road, Newfield Road and Broadfield Road in one direction only on each journey. Direct buses to town will leave Turners Hill on Mondays to Fridays at 0946, and every hour until 1446, but passengers can also travel to town via The Queen’s Square/High Street Green loop at 0929, 1006 and then at 6 minutes past each hour until 1506.
On Saturdays, direct buses will run from Turners Hill at 46 minutes past each hour from 0846 until 1646, and at 06 minutes past each hour from 0906 until 1606 via the loop.
Buses between Turners Hill and The Queen’s Square will run hourly on Mondays to Fridays, leaving Turners Hill at 0929, 1006 and then hourly at 6 minutes past each hour until 1506, returning from The Queen’s Square at 43 minutes past each hour from 0943 until 1443.
On Saturdays, buses will leave Turners Hill for The Queen’s Square at 6 minutes past each hour from 0906 until 1606, returning from The Queen’s Square at 43 minutes past each hour from 0843 until 1643.
These changes are necessary to enable us to continue running these services despite reductions in the level of reimbursement for the use of concessionary passes which has been introduced by central Ggovernment.
Services 4 and 5 (Grovehill – Town Centre – Bennetts End) There will be minor timetable changes during the evening peak period only.
Service H13 (Hemel Hempstead Rail Station – Maylands Industry): The 0812 bus from Hemel Hempstead Rail Station to Maylands Avenue will be withdrawn as a result of Hertfordshire County Council funding reductions.
Services 51/H19/H20 (Hemel Hempstead – Abbotts Langley): These services, which are provided under contract to HCC, will only run on Tuesdays and Thursdays as a result of the Council’s funding cuts.
Service 300 (Hemel Hempstead – St. Albans – Hatfield – Welwyn Garden City – Stevenage): There will be minor timing adjustments on Sundays. At Hemel Hempstead, buses will run direct from Riverside along Waterhouse Sreett to Hemel Hempstead Bus Station, not setting down in Bridge Street. Buses will still run out of town via Marlowes.
Service 301 (Hemel Hempstead – St. Albans – Hatfield – Welwyn Garden City – Stevenage): There will be minor timing adjustments on Sundays. At Hemel Hempstead, buses will run via Marlowes only on their way into Hemel Hempstead.
Service 320 (Hemel Hempstead – Abbotts Langley – Watford - Rickmansworth):
There will be minor timing adjustments. Arriva will also run the evening service on Mondays to
Saturdays under contract to HCC.
Services 500 and 550 (Aylesbury – Hemel Hempstead - Watford): The timetable will
be revised. There will be no change to the basic 10-minute Monday to Friday frequency or the
15-minute Saturday frequency. Service 550 will be extended to run through to Bushey and
Borehamwood, giving new links between Borehamwood and Hemel Hempstead.
Service 550 buses towards Borehamwood will pick up at Stop 6 at Watford Junction Station,
then at Beechen Grove (Stop N) and Water Lane (Stop R). Towards Hemel Hempstead, buses
from Borehamwood will run via Exchange Road and Clarendon Road, picking up at Stop A, as
do Service 500/550 buses at present.
Service 501 (Aylesbury – Hemel Hempstead - Watford): Arriva will run Service 501 in
the evenings, but at a reduced frequency as a result of HCC funding reductions.
Green Line Service 768 (London – Hemel Hempstead) There will be minor timing
adjustments on the 0730 coach from London in order to match the timetable to the actual time
taken.

Okay, so the timetables for the Watford 8 and Watford 10 are still to come on the Intalink website... BUT registered today was a VERY short notice, VERY short duration service - can it be assumed that there was some issue with Z&S taking on the evening services from the agreed date? By the looks of the points, it looks like this registration covers the 8 (Northwood) and the 10 (Holywell)... this is a bit late for doubts, isn't it?

i.e. it would appear Redline are taking over, one week after Z&S International were supposed to!!!

So, what have I been able to dig up? I found Z&S International's LSP application - my emphasis - presumably the Health & Safety policy was not accepted by TfL, hence the fact that the 8/10 have been retendered - but also - Service R21 will continue to be operated by Red Rose Travel!!!! New R21 attached, i.e. same as before but with same operator as before, just a new date. I can only therefore assume Arriva are doing the 8/10 for a week before Redline take over...

Groundbreaking transport improvements include makeover of St Albans’ city bus network
http://www.stalbans.gov.uk/council-and-democracy/press-room/items/2011/March-2011/GroundbreakingtransportimprovementsincludemakeoverofStAlbanscitybusnetwork.aspx

23 March 2011

St Albans’ city bus network is being revamped and improved as part of groundbreaking improvements to public transport in St Albans.

Changes to the city’s S routes are part of a new local transport initiative involving all the key local transport partners in the district.  Other improvements to be made to local public transport, include, as a first stage:

* a new public transport network map, targeted particularly at those who do not know where the buses go, but who might use them if they did,
* bus stop improvements with new shelters and information screens,
* measures to improve bus reliability, and
* the reinstatement of the 712 route between Hatfield, St Albans and London Victoria.

The improvements come as a result of the pioneering work of Network St Albans, a partnership of organisations including all the local bus and train operators, St Albans City and District Council and Hertfordshire County Council.  Network St Albans is working to improve local public transport as a whole.  The approach is to ensure that opportunities presented by new technology are exploited at an early stage, and that the different operators develop services in a joined up way to provide public transport that is comfortable, inviting, convenient and easy to use.

Uno, the bus company that runs the S network, the St Albans City Network, is leading the changes to the S Routes which will have new vehicles, clearer numbering and new timetable information with colour coding for each route.
Further improvements to come later this year will include:

* more new low emission buses, which will help deal with air pollution on Holywell Hill, St Albans,
* new ticketing technology with bus tickets downloadable to mobile phones (similar to that already being used successfully for the University of Hertfordshire park and ride at Hatfield),
* real time information at bus stops and available on mobile phones and online,
* more bus-rail through tickets.

Stephen Joseph, Chair of Network St Albans and Executive Director of the national campaign group Campaign for Better Transport commented:  “St Albans is fortunate to be a district where, overall, transport services are seeing major improvements.  This compares favourably with wholesale cuts in services that we see taking place in some counties like Cambridgeshire and Northamptonshire.  While there are one or two places that are losing out from service changes, overall the picture here is healthy.  These new initiatives will help to drive up the quality and convenience of public transport services in St Albans, Harpenden and right across the district.”

Jim Thorpe, Managing Director of Uno buses commented:  “We are very excited to be playing our part in the improvements to public transport in St Albans. The network in St Albans gets newer buses and a clear brand identity and new map, and we’ve reinstated the 712 service between St Albans and London. This is just the start though, with low emission hybrid buses, real time passenger information and smart and mobile ticketing being introduced on Uno’s bus routes by the end of year.”

Notes for editors

Network St Albans is the first partnership of its kind and has been formed as a result of the Local Transport Act 2008 which offers new opportunities for local authorities to work with transport operators through the creation of 'Quality Partnerships'.

Network St Albans aims to improve quality of life in St Albans by improving transport around the city and reducing congestion and harmful emissions. It includes representatives from the district and county councils (including the Passenger Transport Unit and Hertfordshire Highways), bus and rail operators and the University of Hertfordshire.

Stephen Joseph is the official spokesperson for the partnership.

So, the Uno website has been updated with new timetables. The attached timetable for the 712/714 mentions the £5 day tickets... so do we assume that it's a fiver return to London?

Pink has been launched - and a network map has been posted. This map includes EVERY mainstream bus service in the City of St Albans - yes, even the soon-to-be-ditched T5! See attached map, and specimen Pink-style timetable (S1) - you can see the bus livery in the bottom-left corner.

For the avoidance of doubt, I did not come up with this marketing campaign! ;D

Bizarely, the Uno £5 day ticket will be valid to London Victoria, BUT will not be valid to Stansted - will not be accepted on the 700 beyond Baldock...

... I can only assume that Explorer and ENCTS passes will be valid as usual though!

The St Albans Network Map looks brilliant! I only wish all bus maps were that good.

I like they way they have also put all other bus routes on there, even from other operators.

Message from Uno re a couple of queries about the 712/714...

Dear Suzy

The allocated bus for this service is a Scania, however on the day in question a Citaro was put on the route due to a problem with the Scania.  We do endeavour to put the correct allocated buses on all our routes however we also endeavour to run a full service even if this means having to put a different bus on the route sometimes.

Thank you for making me aware that the lunchtime bus departure on Monday did not leave from the correct stop, I will speak to the driver concerned.

Uno day, weekly and monthly tickets are valid between St Albans – Brent Cross (712) and Hatfield – Hendon Central (714) only.

One final update for this... I was previously questioning the changes to the 324/392. After Centrebus won the contract for Service 324, they registered it a week later to run as an hourly through service, via the 392 route. Now, as a result, RoadRunner registered their service to duplicate the 324. Centrebus withdrew their 392 through service before it started, and presumably are continuing on the 324. However, RoadRunner have not deregistered their 392 service, and as such will run through from Harlow to Hertford, albeit via Hertford Heath and Broxbourne in a V-shape. Timetable attached... file name altered by myself to highlight the change.
