Stephensons SUFFOLK & CAMBRIDGESHIRE Happenings 2012
« on: January 02, 2012, 10:03:16 PM »
This is a new format of note pages, for general day-to-day sightings, run-of-the-mill daily observations, and even the more unusual strays spotted in daily operation.

Open up a separate thread for service changes, and major announcements (i.e. PI callings, new ownership, cessation of operations, that kind of thing!)

This thread shall continue throughout 2012, but Admins reserve the right to cut one and start again if there are more than 250 postings in one particular thread, or if there is an argument or serious off-topic problems etc.

Enjoy!

A different Stephensons bus seen in Suffolk this week is SK02 XGP, a Dennis Dart/Plaxton MPD transferred from Essex.

As a result of some changes to school starting and finishing times (and shared school properties) in Mildenhall from this week there is a new variant to service 16 (Mildenhall-Bury St Edmunds) numbered 16B which runs Bury to Mildenhall in the mornings returning Mildenhall-Bury in the afternoons.

Another different bus seen at Bury St Edmunds a few days this week operating on the Haverhill service is 456, a Plaxton Pointer bodied Dennis Dart similar in size and style to GU52 HKD etc.

It carries registration number XS 2210.

Does anyone know what it was originally registered?

One of the ex EYMS Olympians, J562HAT (?) was operating on the 5 service from Haverhill to Cambridge Regional College today. Evidently they have won the contract off Stagecoach

Picture of Scania double decker 505 leaving Bury St Edmunds on the X14 today (14 November). It replaced the Scania/Irizar coach which developed a fault (yet again!). It seems rather unreliable. I am told it also failed on the A14 last Saturday (10 November) and had to be towed home.

The bus carries an unusual rear end item praising one of the Stephensons drivers:

That's probably the best bus Haverhill has ever had on a bury run. apart from burton's lovely trident!

I can't say I've ever had experience of Stephensons Olympuses, but if they're anything as good as the ones Metroline run in London then even a longer run like that would be fine on them. Still not a patch on a coach!

Bus seated Dart/Enviro200 number 463 (YX11 CTU) was seen working a trip on the X14 Bury St. Edmunds to Ipswich service on Saturday 8 December 2012.

Both of Stephensons Alexander PS bodied Volvo B10M's were in and out of Bury St Edmunds on services 15/16 on Saturday 13 April 2013. Neither have been regulars in recent times.

Stephensons had N827FKK out on the 1520 14B and the 1615 on the 15A from Bury St Edmunds, both transpire to be one-way workings. I did board it with a view to doing it to Haverhill and back on the 1615, and whilst the driver was revealing that the return fare for the 48 minute journey is £8.20 I read his duty card and discovered my return journey would not be on this vehicle anyway, and so I decided that this incredible sum of money would stay in my pocket. This is the second time Stephensons have priced themselves way out of the market- the fuel cost (according to Google Maps) is significantly less than £8.20, and this episode reminded me of the Grays College to Southend fare when they ran that route- 30p more expensive than the train which takes a quarter of the time!!!

I did ask if there was a day ticket option which may be cheaper, he tried on the machine for something called a rainbow but there was only a pot of gold (for Stephensons) at the end of it. £8 feels like quite a lot for the sparse network they operate by the way- it's not like anyone could go from Southend to Bury St Edmunds as there are gaps in the 'network'. Maybe if someone was there all day and there was a Leyland on the 17 AND on an all-day duty on the 14/15 it would be worthwhile, otherwise go somewhere else!!

I believe the fares are quite high thanks to Suffolk CC withdrawing funding for several routes - I can only assume Stephensons have decided to charge fares that are commercially viable rather than withdraw services.
