Bingo contracts
« on: August 21, 2017, 12:13:58 pm »
On another forum which I regularly read and contribute, bingo contracts were mentioned. I thought I would share a posting which I have made there.

Bingo contracts were very popular in the past - sometimes arranged privately by a party of regular and eager punters or sometimes arranged by the bingo halls to ensure they had a regular attendance.

I recall a number of local coach operators in East Anglia covering such work from small towns and villages to the nearest bingo halls. In many cases the bingo halls have gone and the contracts with them.

After passing my PSV driving test in May 1985 I worked part time for Premier Travel of Cambridge. On my first solo driving day I drove a former London DMS Fleetline (KJD 24P) from Haverhill to Wicksteed Park with a Sunday School party. Upon my return to the garage I then had to take NEB 346R, a Plaxton Supreme bodied AEC Reliance, on one of the bingo contracts Premier had at the time.  The first pick-up was outside the Burtons Coaches garage in Duddery Hill at 1830 with pick-ups at a number of other places around the housing estates (guided by the first passengers on board of course as I had no idea where I was going!). The destination was the bingo hall in Hobson Street, Cambridge. The return trip left there at 2145. There was a second contract at the time starting in Linton travelling via Sawston to the same bingo hall.

I have a photograph of the coach taken that evening which may be seen here:

And a copy of the driver schedule for the two contracts referred to:

There was another bingo contract I drove just the once, and on the inward trip only as another driver did the return run, from the village of Newton to the bingo hall in Newmarket. My duty that day is mentioned in the caption to this photograph:
