I did 18424 on the 6 after work yesterday and as predicted 18336 did do the 1741 9 and today it should do the 1729 9. 53702 was parked up in the bays for the froghoppers on the 3, 4, 7, 8 and 10 circuits which was not particularly helpful for the service buses. Someone have a word with these EMT drivers. 18101 did the 1715 50 with 18057 not far behind it on a 51.

This morning my conveyances to work came courtesy of 34425 on the 9 and 36042 on the 6. Other piffle in the vicinity were 18419 on a 9, 47354 on a 1, 19705 on the 0905 72, 37439 on the 0916 53 and 18190 on the 0932 50.

On 29 May 2013 I viewed 14000 entering town with 73 on the blind so whether it was really on the 0815 from Biggleswade I never did find out. After work that evening 16224 produced for the 1715 81 so I had no hesitation in doing a return trip to Luton which in truth was a bit of a nuisance as I had to get to Ramsgate that night and I didn't get back to Bedford until 1920. I was to be withered whilst down in Kent as 16225 was reported as being out all day on the 1's on 1 June 2013.

On today's date in 2014 16224 was out again for me after work. I had the choice of the laughable 47442 on the 1745 42 or 16224 on the 1747 6 to Brickhill so I went to Brickhill and back via the station. It then did the one way 1831 5 and as I required 16224 for the route it had to be done. This meant I had to put up with poisoned dart 34422 back from Elms Farm and 34826 to get home on the 9 but needs must.

To think I once used to tell people that 16224 was harder to get than 14000... ::)

My journey in to town on supposedly withdrawn Optare Solo 47354 (AE06TWN) on the 1 was cut short when it suffered a puncture on the way out of Kempston.

Whilst in town I observed training Darts 34421/22 (KV53EYX/Y) on the 72 and 3 respectively
Enviro 200MMC's 37431 (SN16OPV) on the 51, 37434/39 on the 53
Enviro 300's 27643 (GX10HBY) with missing 2 on its rear fleet number on the 1 and 27647 (GX10KYZ) on the 53
I haven't come across 27642 (GX10HBU) yet. Has this one arrived yet from Kings Lynn?

I had a look around at Buckdales to find Enviro 36934 (SN63KFO) still impounded there. I know it was involved in a fatality accident but it's been there for nearly 6 months now!

I took a walk by the depot to see if there was anything interesting going on to find Dart 34419 (KV53EYU) and Trident 18109 (KX04RVL) had disappeared from the front of the garage where they'd been for months and were nowhere to be seen. Nothing else noteable there today

Had a trip to Bedford to do the later batch of solo's from Kings Lynn, (48031-36) on Thursday last week.

I picked up all except 48031, which also I couldn't see at the depot.

Has anybody any idea where it may have been?

Thanks

I was going to report that I was right 18336 was my bus home on the 1729 9 as predicted last Wednesday but I found myself exiled from this site ever since until today. This prevented me reporting required for sight 19083 on the 1715 50 on the same evening. Last Thursday 53708 was the monstrosity parked up which was shooed away by the frogs so they could use their Greyfriars bays whilst 19889 did an X5 Cambridge. On Friday 19888 arrived on an X5 with Oxford on the blind but I didn't wait to see if it did the 0930 or not as I had to get to work. 18101 did the 0932 50.

You will have to excuse my lack of info for this morning as I didn't bother making any observations as I thought the lock keeper would not let me into this site. So you will just have to put up with old piffle from years gone by starting with 1 June 2010 when I did 16675 on a S1 into town for 14042 home via Shortstown on the 1825 9. On 3 June 2011 I did 16216 on a V1 to Kempston for 16218 back on a 1 and straight back to Kempston on it for a full rounder.

On this very date in 2010 I did 14035 on a 6 to work and on this day in 2011 I couldn't turn down 16175 so this was done to Oakley and back on a 51 and 16216 was done to Norse Road and back on a 5.

Look out for Enviro 200MMC 37436 (SN16ORF), It's the first to lose "Coast hopper" livery and is due back from Chesterfield very shortly if not back already. There's a pic of it's rear end on flickr, sadly no front end shot.

Dart 34825 (KX06LNV) was parked in the bus station this afternoon appearing to have had a recent repaint. 34833 (KX06JYR) was parked beside it looking very scruffy indeed compared to it. In my opinion 34833 is Bedford's worst looking bus.

My friend that drives for stagecoach says the fitters are getting fed up with the Darts constantly going wrong and want rid of them. They'll probably have to wait another year or two I reckon.
Bedford's fleet has more variety than most Stagecoach fleets, this is what keeps it interesting. I think Cambridge's fleet for example is boring as it's mostly all Enviro's with the odd ALX400 thrown in

Are you sure you don't mean 48021 (YJ15AAZ) as that one has been at Cambridge for a while.
48031 (YJ66ARZ) has been in service in Bedford very recently

Bedford may have more variety but the Stagecoach variety pack was in short supply for me yesterday as all I got were 27645 to work, 27644 from work on the 6's and 27647 on the 9 home. On Monday I had walked into town in the drizzle, stiff breeze and general dullness before doing 27645 to work on the 6 extolling the delights of discovering Christmas in Kings Lynn.

This morning I walked into town in the drizzle, stiff breeze and general dullness and did 27645 to work on the 6 extolling the delights of discovering Christmas in Kings Lynn. A complete repeat of what I did yesterday so perhaps I am caught in a time loop like Dr Who's Carnival of Monsters in 1973 where people just keep repeating the same actions over and over.

On my way home yesterday I noted that poisoned dart 833 is gradually being cured as it now has 4833 on the front and on closer inspection a blue 3 so if the garage can find a white 3 it will be whole again. 53618 was let loose on the 1726 X5 to Cambridge, 34425 did a 2, pinky 36045 was on the 53, 34424 on a 9, 34428 on a 71 whilst 37439 did the 1730 81 to Luton. Hopefully followed by a flock of seagulls running far away.

Has anyone else noticed that since the Hoppers have appeared, that the seagull population has risen from nothing to an angry possee? Last week about 30 of these creatures whirled around the bus station mistaking Bedford for Cromer and I put the blame squarely on these Hoppers which have made these pesky birds think they are on the coast. Two Sundays ago, very early on, walking through the town centre all you could hear was the traditional cries of seagulls overhead as they took over in the absence of human life. Until all the Hoppers are repainted we may be stuck with them...

In other news today 53708 was seen heading up Greyfriars to Bromham Road, 34421 was on the 3 and 7 circuit, 34422 did a 41 to Northampton, 18419 and 18424 were on 6's as was the inappropriate 47351, 37439 arrived on a 72, 19698 did the 0915 51, 19888 the 0915 81 and 18057 the 0915 73.

The variety route in Bedford today is the 53 with Trident 18336 (AE55DJV), Dart 34428 (KV53EZE) , Enviro 200 MMC 37438 (SN16ORH) and Solo SR 48032 (YJ66ASO) instead the usual route branded 08 plate Enviro 200's although 36044 (AE08NVU) was back on the service this afternoon. 18335 could really do with a repaint as could 18419 (AE06GZR) and most of the Enviro 400's

I'm told 37436 (SN16ORF) is now back from Chesterfield and should enter service in corporate livery very shortly.

This morning I walked into town in the drizzle, stiff breeze and general dullness and did 27645 to work on the 6 extolling the delights of discovering Christmas in Kings Lynn. Yes unbelievably I am still trapped in this cycle of despair so I don't know if today is actually Wednesday or whether I am still in Monday. Perhaps I am on the Starship Enterprise holodeck with no hope of stepping out or else I will cease to exist. Thankfully I am not at work tomorrow so I can break free from this recurring sameness.

At least on this date in 2012 my bus to work and back was gold 15751 on the 50 and better than 27645 which is starting to haunt me. Preserving my sanity by being a bit different were 18057 on the 0915 73 (same as yesterday), 34421 on the 0915 51, 19700 on the 0915 81, 37438 on the 0845 73, 19701 on the 0905 72, 37433 on a 41 to Northampton, 34425 on a 2, 37437 on a 53 and the full route 9 complement passing me on my walk 27523, 36042, 18336 and 18419. I predict 18336 will do the 1741 9 and I expect to be correct.  ;)

Appeal for branding information:

I am now working on a new edition of the Stagecoach East Fleet Handbook. Is anyone able to confirm which vehicles at Bedford (either in service or parked up) carry Bedford Bus Branding?

Many Thanks

I was right 18336 was my 1741 home on Wednesday albeit 10 minutes late departing.

Yesterday I broke my nightmare with 27645 albeit it was allocated the 9's in another attempt to nail me but I got 18423 into town instead.

Selection of plastic viewed Thursday at the bus station minus Centrebus 593 which had casually parked up all day on Wednesday as if it owned the place:
1 - 19698, 19701, 19705, 19706, 19892
2 - 19703, 36936, 36937
3/7 - 34425, 48033, 48034
4 - 48024
9 - 18423, 27645, 34421, 34832
42 - 19889
51 - 37432
53 - 18336, 36044, 36045, 37433
71 - 34828, 34833
72 - 19699, 37439
73 - 18419, 19704

On my return in the evening Arriva had spoilt the ambience of the railway station with 3613 and 3957 presumably ready for the next Thameslink cancellation. Nice to see we are getting a reduced train service from these rogues instead of the extra trains promised to compensate for the loss of EMT services stopping at Bedford so we end up the big losers all round.

At the bus station 34421, 34422, 34424 and 34828 were all parked up. 19889 arrived on a 41, 18419 arrived on a 53, 19704 arrived on a 72 and 35225 arrived on a 50. 47435 was ready to work an 8 and I had 19701 home on the 2015 9.

I fell victim to Stagecoach deception this morning. I had walked into town Monday to Wednesday as the 0847 9 on schooldays more often than not doesn't appear. Naturally when I had the day off and I decided to go into town on the bus the 0847 duly produced yesterday. Kidded by this sensation, as I was back in the office today, I foolishly went to cover the 0847 and hey presto nothing. It makes no difference if Bedford has a fleet of 500 buses they would still manage to miss out the 0847. So eventually I found myself on the 0859 running 6 minutes late on 27643 so missing out on the 0911 6 once again. It appears that route 9 only had 27522, 27523 and 27643 on it so we have lost a bus.

I thought I was going to have 27645 to work again when it appeared round the corner but in fact it was 27644 Billy Bin so that was close. I didn't see much this morning other than 19699 on the 0905 72, 37431 on the 0915 51 and 18336 on a 1.

On this day in 2010 I went home the long way round via Shortstown with 16681 on the 1925 9.

Saturday 9 June 2012 I did three return journeys on the 18 from Cambridge to Caxton with 16587 out and back, 16593 out and back and 16589 out and back. I know this is not Bedford but 16593 did become a Bedford bus afterwards.

When I went home last Friday 53703 was enjoying the hospitality of Bedford bus station which is fast becoming a sanctuary for any stray vehicles. Perhaps some enthusiasts might like to park an Olympian at the bus station when they get a moment. At least there will be something worth photographing again should that happen. Centrebus 593 and Arriva 3605 were hanging about the train station touting for business which I'm certain would arise.

After Friday's bowl out with the 0847 9 I opted to walk to town today and par for the course, 34424 passed me carrying two passengers, bang on time with the 0847. So after wearing out shoe leather for no gain, I did the late 0911 6 with 27644 (same as Friday) only to bail at Clapham Road when winner 15405 passed me heading for the bus station. I walked back to the terminus to scoop the orange Corby Star blob on the 0932 50 to orange Sainsburys and fabricated a decent excuse for being late for work along the lines of being tangoed for the second time in 3 weeks after having 15401 late in May. I have to say the legroom in the back seats of the lower deck is shocking. There is a rather pointless two bays of four in front as if anyone would wish to travel backwards which takes up so much space you have about 3 inches of legroom on the back bench to the extent that I had to sit sideways with my feet on the seat as I couldn't sit facing forwards. Was the designer of these interiors still at nursery school when drawing up the layout with legroom only sufficient for a toddler?

Other runners observed were 19888 arriving on an X5 from Cambridge and turning round to form the late 0926 X5 back to Cambridge. 37438 was on a 72, 36042 on a 3, 19699 the 0915 81, 19705 the 0915 73, 19893 the 0945 42 and the pain that is 27645 on the 9 with 34424 and 18336.

Going back to 10 June 2011 I did 16218 on the S1 into town for a return trip on the 1 to Kempston and back with 16230. The same date in 2013 after work saw me venture to Wootton and back when 16221 did the 1853 53 and the same date in 2014 I became a bit greedy and did two return trips to Shortstown with 16226 on the 1753 and 1845 9's. I can't find anything of interest for the 11 June in any year...

Enjoying your posts... if you are having issues with Stagecoach in Bedford, I can recommend BABUS - www.babus.org.uk - our AGM this July (Sat 7th) will be with their new Commercial Manager. Once I get the newsletter/agm notice draft finalised I will post it in their board.

DISCLAIMER: i'm their (part-time) comms officer

Do give them a hard time about the state of the Elites! Two or even three E400s on the X5 pretty much daily. I do appreciate any bus is better than no bus, but we do pay premium fares in return for the promise of leather seats, wifi and power - and the oomph to get up Madingley hill at more than 20!

An unusual way to fail - 54306 managed to get stuck in Cambridge for 15 minutes or so with its door jammed on the pavement at Midsummer Common last week.

To be fair things have improved a little with the influx of much newer vehicles from Kings Lynn. Bedford's fleet has badly needed investment for years and could still do with improvement with the Darts still very unreliable and some now looking very scruffy especially 34833 (KX06JYR).
The Elites on the X5 have been a disaster since day one. Stagecoach would be better off replacing them and transferring them to a less intensively used service at another depot. They're simply not fit for purpose on the X5.

Any Olympian that did the X5 was the best bus for me but I am biased.

Once again I had 18336 home yesterday on the 1741 9 as 37432 did a 1. 27647 was the missing number 9 I didn't view in the morning. I assume we have some new drivers getting prepped as training vehicles 52437 was out yesterday gadding about and this morning it was 52485. Perhaps the 0847 9 might start appearing more often but it did appear today, albeit 5 minutes down, with 36042 which seems to work all routes except the 53. The other three on the 9 were 27643, 27647 and 34827 so no deckers today.

18057 was my choice of vehicle on the 6 to work passing 18336 coming the other way.

On this day in 2013 I did 16221 to Oakley on the 1745 Rushden 51 for 34826 back. Earlier in the day I had been withered in my lunch break as 16225 arrived back in Bedford on a 42 being the return working of the 1245. On the same date in 2014 I again went to Oakley and back on 16226 which did the 1815 51.

Any coach / DP vehicle that doesn't break down with monotonous regularity, basically. The Scania/Caetano coaches that NX use, perhaps, or if the route is too punishing on coaches then Scania/E40Ds as used on the busway? Even the 536xx Volvos were a lot more reliable than the present batch.

The most common fault with the Elites appears to be the doors. Also extra capacity is needed so with both of those in mind I would choose Gold spec Scania Enviro 400 MMC's as they offer more capacity and have doors designed for stop start services. The downside of these though would be the lack of luggage space compared to the Elites
