Statement from First in Berkshire

Monday 29 June 2015

First is very sorry to announce that it is proposing to close its bus depot in Bracknell and withdraw most of its services in the area from Saturday 29 August, 2015.

Operations in Bracknell have been loss-making for some time and the recent unsuccessful bid to operate tendered services for Bracknell Forest Council has added further pressure

Under the proposals, some routes will be retained but will operate from Firsts depot in Slough.

These include an enhanced Service 200 between Windsor and Legoland, and Greenline Services 700, 701 and 702. However, these London services will no longer stop in Bracknell from the end of the summer season.

First's yellow school bus services will continue to operate from its base at Chertsey.

It is proposed to withdraw all other services in the Bracknell area. This will include Service 90 which has been sold to Reading Buses which First will operate up to and including Saturday 25 July.

All its commercial services will continue running up to and including Friday 28 August. It will cease operating its tendered services on behalf of Bracknell Forest Council on Saturday 11 July.

Customers with season tickets and passes that run after 28 August can apply for refunds from 4 August. Information will follow shortly as to how to apply for refunds.

We shall also be giving more information soon about the services which we propose to withdraw.

Rumours about Bracknell closing have been bounded about now for a good few years - its not a massive surprise they've finally pulled the plug.

Is that not outstationed at Reading Buses? If so I'd expect that to continue, under Slough instead.

I believe it is. Reading Buses have been trying to get their hands on operating that service for years. Will seem odd to have 1 First service in what is now foreign territory for them.

They currently work a Leopard3 service to Wokingham, which is another tender gain from West Berks.
They did, of course, also take over the Newbury depot of Berks Bucks (now First BeeLine).

In my railway career in the early 80's I was responsible (timetabling etc) for the railway side of the Reading = Heathrow Air Link. It was operated by Alder Valley services then on contract to BR. Subsequently the bus company took full responsibility for the running of the service. Come 2017 the service would have  been running for 50 years.

Just to add my 10 pennyworth re Railair coaches, they are now being painted/branded in a scheme which matches the Dublin Airlink brand.

It will be interesting to see exactly what happens to the remaining Bracknell operation, easy enough to operate the Greenline 701/702 & 191 routes from Slough as they go there/pass nearby.
The 94 Bracknell to Camberley (Where you can see First, Arriva & Stagecoach buses in the same street) and local routes B!/2/3 & 5 will be more problematic, also I am not sure how much parking space the Slough depot has, The VOSA site gives a maximum of 140 on the operating licence but I don't think the depot has space to park anywhere near that many vehicles.
Current allocations at Bracknell are:
9 B9TL/Wright for 701/702
14 B7TL/Plaxton for 90 & 94 (probably 50% will be surplus with route 90 going to RB)
7 Enviro 200 & 1 Solo - I would expect most these to become surplus with the loss of tendered work to Courtneys.
14 Merc' Citaros for 191 & B1/2/3/5.
So up to 30 vehicles could be transferred to Slough.
Presume the 8 American schoolbuses are still outstationed at Thorpe Park? - can anyone confirm?

On the face of it, First are pulling all their Bracknell routes except for Greenlines 701/702.
Even the 191 Slough- Windsor - Bracknell appears to be cancelled.
It may be however that new registrations will be made for some or all of these routes.

700-702 will also be curtailed at Windsor LEGOLAND - I assume these, and the 200, will be Slough?

Service Number: 94

Well that didn't last long!
The 94 is now cancelled from 13 March
Registered on VOSA end of last week
Could this be a sign that Courtney's have won the war?
