Weight restriction to affect X4
« on: May 23, 2018, 07:53:53 PM »
A report in ‘RouteOne’ magazine dated 23 May 2018 tells of a weight restriction to be imposed on the A427 north east of Oundle that will affect Stagecoach service X4:

Quote
Coach and bus operators travelling to the historic market town of Oundle via the A427 face a detour when Northamptonshire County Council (NCC) slaps a threetonne limit on the key access route, during the next eight weeks. The council says the condition of seven of the bridge’s 13 arches over the River Nene are deteriorating, first identified in 2014. NCC does not have the £750,000 for repairs to the 1912-built bridge. The section of the A427 links Oundle with the A605 trunk road to Peterborough and westwards to the A14. NCC expects the alternative route to be via Barnwell to the A605. Stagecoach Midlands, which runs half-hourly buses between Oundle and Peterborough, would have preferred an exemption for local buses. However the council tells routeone that because the weight limit is due to structural issues, no dispensation will be given. Stagecoach says closure of the bridge to buses will impact its operating costs as it will need to increase the route’s peak vehicle requirement (PVR).

The diversion via Barnwell adds nearly five miles and started January 27th with a new timetable (alternate journeys omit Lynch Wood and Elton and travel direct). All buses in Oundle do a clockwise loop via New St and New Road to serve the Market Place in the same direction.

However, roadworks at Barnwell started in February (to install traffic lights at the junction I think) and were causing significant delays so there is now a diversion to the diversion with buses going via Cotterstock and joining the Glapthorn Road in Oundle opposite the George pub. This avoids the Oundle bypass and Barnwell. It had started by March 1st but probably started earlier. This is a very rural diversion through a pretty village and well worth a trip (got my long-awaited senior bus pass today and made sure this was my first outing). Driver thought the diversion would last until the end of March or so then it would revert to the "proper" diversion via Barnwell.

Cheers
Brendan
